Going Green: China Foreign Transportation Develops the First Electric Container Ship in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area
In the future, China Foreign Transportation will continue to deepen the construction of green waterways, promote the application of electric vessel technology, explore green supply chain solutions for waterway electric boats, highway electric vehicles, and multimodal transportation, leverage the advantages of its own docks and yards to deploy distributed photovoltaics, research and construct charging and swapping facilities, establish a green energy supply network, weave a "green logistics supply chain" network for customers, and contribute to the construction of green logistics.

Recently, the first electric container ship in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the "Yue Tong Zhujiang 001," was successfully delivered at Dongjiang Warehousing Company under China Foreign Transportation, and will be put into operation by China Foreign Transportation South China on the ShiLong-Nansha domestic trade route. This is the first "green" route in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area built by China Foreign Transportation in the "dual carbon" race.
Since 2022, China Foreign Transportation and its partners have carried out application research on electric container ship technology, selecting the "ShiLong-Nansha" route and ShiLong wharf, which are self-operated by China Foreign Transportation's Bay Area barge operation center, as the initial pilot project. Comprehensive analysis and research were conducted on aspects such as ship selection, energy supply, and ship modification, ultimately leading to the successful delivery of the "Yue Tong Zhujiang 001."
This ship is a suitable model for inland river routes in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It is 49.99 meters long and 13 meters wide. Originally a traditional diesel-powered vessel, after being retrofitted with "oil-to-electricity" technology, it uses box-type batteries as its propulsion power source, can sail for about 100 nautical miles, and achieves near-zero emissions throughout the voyage. After the vessel is officially put into operation, it is predicted that a single ship will save about 71.28 tons of diesel per year and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 220.97 tons. Currently, there are about 6,000 container ships in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area that use fuel as their power source. As the first container ship in the Greater Bay Area to achieve green navigation through "oil-to-electricity" technology, the "Yue Tong Zhujiang 001" will provide a replicable and promotable model for energy-saving transformation of similar fuel-powered container ships.
In the future, China Foreign Transportation will continue to deepen the construction of green waterways, promote the application of electric ship technology, explore green supply chain solutions for electric watercraft, electric road vehicles, and multimodal transportation, leverage the advantages of its own wharves and yards to deploy distributed photovoltaics, research and build charging and swapping facilities, establish a green energy supply network, weave a "green logistics supply chain" network for customers, and contribute to the construction of green logistics.
