At 5:30 pm on December 15th, with the smooth landing of CA1027 flight departing from Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport at Liege Airport in Belgium, China International Air Cargo Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Air China Cargo") and Cainiao Smart Logistics Network Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Cainiao Logistics") successfully completed the first commercial cargo flight of sustainable aviation fuel in China. Air China Cargo also became the first cargo airline in China to use sustainable aviation fuel certified by the Civil Aviation Administration of China. This flight marks a practical breakthrough in the green development of air logistics in Chinese civil aviation, laying the foundation for the widespread promotion of sustainable aviation fuel in the air logistics industry.
Sustainable Aviation Fuel (hereinafter referred to as "SAF fuel") refers to fuel that meets sustainability standards, derived from biomass, waste cooking oil, and other hydrocarbon-containing raw materials, processed to meet civil aviation jet fuel standards. Compared to traditional fossil fuels, SAF fuel can reduce carbon emissions by up to 85% throughout its lifecycle, from raw material collection to end-user use. This cargo flight used SINOPEC Zhenhai Refinery's SAF product certified by the Civil Aviation Administration of China, with professional services provided by China Aviation Oil Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "CAO") throughout the procurement, inspection, transportation, and refueling process. The application of SAF fuel on Air China Cargo's commercial cargo flights demonstrates Air China Cargo's social responsibility and mission as a flagship cargo airline, and also reflects the active exploration and practice of Air China Cargo and Cainiao Logistics in carbon reduction throughout the air logistics chain.
Zheng Bao'an, Chairman of Air China Cargo, stated that "promoting green development and promoting harmonious coexistence between humans and nature" is the latest strategic deployment made by the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China to achieve "dual carbon" goals. The operation of this sustainable aviation fuel cargo flight is an attempt and exploration by Air China Cargo and Cainiao Logistics to jointly practice the concept of green development and scientifically promote green and low-carbon development. In the future, Air China Cargo will continue to adhere to the general work principle of seeking progress while maintaining stability, adhere to innovation-driven development, continuously improve its professional level, and work with various partners to explore more effective energy-saving and emission-reduction measures, striving to provide global customers with higher-quality green and low-carbon air cargo services.
Wan Lin, CEO of Cainiao, stated that Cainiao and Air China Cargo will give full play to their respective advantages, jointly creating a range of green aviation projects including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), terminal electrification, and aviation ground handling cooperation. They will also explore commercially viable green aviation projects through continuous technological innovation, maximizing the economic benefits of per-unit carbon emissions, and work with partners to explore more effective emission-reduction measures, building a sustainable green logistics system, turning carbon reduction into a capability, and serving more businesses and consumers.
Du Chao, General Manager of CAO East China Company, stated that this cooperation with Air China Cargo and Cainiao Logistics is a new expansion and breakthrough for the SAF fuel supply network. CAO will use this as a new starting point to continue providing the "energy-saving, emission-reduction, and green flight" "China Aviation Oil solution" to the entire industry's "dual carbon" cause. CAO will continue to actively fulfill its responsibilities and mission as a central enterprise under the "dual carbon" strategy and vigorously promote the application of SAF fuel in the civil aviation field.
On December 14, with the witness of the Zhejiang Provincial Civil Aviation Safety Supervision Bureau, Hangzhou Airport, CAO, and Air China Zhejiang Company, Air China Cargo and Cainiao Logistics held a brief ceremony commemorating the first commercial cargo flight of sustainable aviation fuel domestically and signed a memorandum of cooperation on green development. Both parties stated that they will continue to explore green and low-carbon solutions for air logistics, enhance the application of SAF fuel in commercial cargo flights, and promote the construction of an air logistics carbon asset management system.
